Over the past several years, Food & Beverage chains have been capitalizing on mobile apps to create Rewards programs for their frequent customers. Some of these programs are great, some aren’t. This week, I’d like to talk about one that I use all the time: the Dunkin’ Donuts DD Perks Program.
Summary of Benefits
- FREE Beverage for enrollment
- Earn 5 points for every $1 spent
- 200 points can be redeemed for Free Beverage of any size
- Special deals & discounts every week
- Quick accrual of points
DD Perks is a mobile app-based rewards program that let’s you pay with a pre-loaded, digital Dunkin’ Donuts card in exchange for points and perks. Every $1 spent earns you 5 points, and 200 points gets you a ‘Free Beverage Reward’ that can be redeemed for any size drink. The app also let’s you do “Order-on-the-Go,” in which you pay on your app ahead of time, then just come by the designated Dunkin’ location to pick up your drink without standing in any lines.
You can reload your card directly in the app or on the desktop site with your credit/debit card, Visa Checkout, or Masterpass. The minimum amount you can reload is $10. You can set it to as high as you want, or just set up auto-refill so that your app charges the card on file for a designated amount each time you go empty. If you only have a partial balance left on your app, you can still pay with it, then pay the remainder with cash or credit/debit.
Perks include buy-one-get-one deals, discounted prices, and point multiplier days. In many Dunkin’ locations, they do $1 coffee deals on days after your region’s NFL team wins a game, as long as you use your app to make the purchase. Recently, there was a promotional period in which every visit gave you an extra 50 points. This meant if you bought your coffee, donut, and sandwich and rung each up separately, you’d leave with 150 extra points, in addition to the points you earned from your regular purchase.
This is a way more straightforward program than others, and you can earn points faster than you would on something like the Starbucks Loyalty program. In fact, I already have 3 Free Beverage Rewards saved on my account that I still haven’t used yet.
There are some features like auto-refill that could be handy for some, that I don’t use. I avoid doing this, and opt to just refill manually every time I need more money in the app. I feel like auto-refill just puts me in the habit of giving money to Dunkin’ in an almost subscription style system. Doing it manually gives me more control about how much I want to spend on the card.
If you already frequent Dunkin’ Donuts, or are basically anyone in New England (I see you guys), this is definitely a program you should look into.
