The long-awaited Avengers: Infinity War trailer has finally arrived. Nearly a decade in the making, and currently consisting of 17 movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is perhaps the most expansive movie franchise to have ever existed. All of the events from the previous movies however, have culminated to bring us this moment, when the Avengers face off against Thanos. This will be the beginning of the final phase for this core group of heroes, with the story concluding with Avengers 4 (Infinity War: Part II).
In the trailer, we see where the Avengers wound up since last we saw them. Tony has finally met Doctor Strange. Cap is probably still in exile, judging by his facial hair and lack of shield. Bruce Banner has made it back to Earth after his journey through space (see Thor: Ragnarok). Thor finally meets the Guardians of the Galaxy! It appears that Vision, now in human skin for some reason, is romantically involved with Wanda. Black Widow is also reunited with Bruce. I don’t think I saw Hawkeye, so I have questions about what he may be up to, and what his absence from the trailer might mean for the character. We also finally see Thanos in action.
From the title of the movie and scenes from the trailer, it’s pretty obvious that Thanos will obtain the Infinity Stones. This probably means that Vision (who was sporting human skin in this trailer), will probably die when Thanos takes away the Infinity Stone located in Vision’s head. Whether his death will be permanent remains to be seen. Once Thanos gets his hands on all the stones, things take a turn for the worse. Chances are, the first part of Infinity War will bring together our heroes as Thanos collects the stones. Then, Avengers: Infinity War Part II will be about the heroes figuring out how to defeat Thanos. There have been rumors that Cap himself may die, leaving the door open for Falcon or Bucky to take the helm as the new Captain America, post-Infinity War. Whether his death comes during Part I or II, however, remains to be seen. Perhaps we’ll get an Empire Strikes Back style cliffhanger ending in Infinity War that leaves our heroes weakened and separated, and audiences in anticipation for the final movie.
Watching this trailer just brought back a wash of nostalgia, to when the first Iron Man movie came out and teased the Avengers Initiative. Especially because the trailer opens with Nick Fury’s dialogue from the first Avengers, but spoken by each of the Avengers instead. That was a nice touch. Since that time, we were introduced to the Avengers, we saw them assemble, we saw them clash, we saw them unite, we saw them evolve. I can’t believe we’ve arrived at this point. In our lifetimes, we’re getting an actual Infinity War story arc in live-action. I absolutely cannot wait for this movie.
Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for release on May 4, 2018. If you need something to hold you until then, you can always rewatch the first two Avengers movies, or any of the other 15 movies in the MCU.
