Pixar just released the first ever teaser trailer for the movie Soul. Soul is a story about Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a middle school teacher who aspires to become a successful jazz musician. Right as he seems to be on the verge of a career breakthrough, an accident befalls him that causes his soul to be separated from his body. Gardner then gets sent to the ‘You Seminar’ in another realm of existence. In his new incorporeal state, he befriends a jaded soul named 22 (Tina Fey), and goes on a journey to understand the meaning of life.[1]

Soul will explore concepts such as pursuing one’s passion and seeking the important things in life. While Pixar is no stranger to exploring bigger concepts, all packaged in fun and delightful ways that can appeal to children, this new project will be nothing like any of its predecessors. Soul will be the first ever Pixar jazz movie to have an African-American lead.[2] The film will also dive into the metaphysical world, which is quite a distance from Andy’s Room or the offices of Monsters Inc.

The teaser trailer is short, but gives us a great idea of what we can expect from this movie.

The trailer starts with a voiceover, asking viewers what they want to do with their lives, and talks about not wasting time on the “junk of life.” This is in sync with shots of doctors, barbers, and stock brokers going about their 9-5. It then emphasizes looking for what brings out the “brilliant, passionate you.” This second portion of the narrative is in sync with shots of characters exploring their passions, mostly musicians. Once Joe is introduced, we see that he gets a call of a lifetime. As he is talking about it on the phone, he accidentally falls into a manhole, which is when he becomes a soul. We see his soul in the void of the cosmos, in a sort of ‘stairway to heaven’ walkway leading to the unknown. We’re then introduced to Fey’s 22.

Soul is directed by Pete Docter, the current Chief Creative Officer of Pixar, and two-time Academy Award winner for Up and Inside Out.[3] Whereas the latter explored the mind of a child going through the perils of puberty, Soul will focus on journey of an adult and the type of existential questions all adults face. It’ll certainly be interesting to follow the journey of a young artist achieving his dreams, as told by Docter and his team of artists who may have mirrored this journey when they were coming up.

It’s clear that jazz and music will take center stage, with the primary characters being musicians. Soul will feature music by Jon Batiste, as well as Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Reznor and Ross created the score for popular movies such as Gone Girl, as well as The Social Network, a film for which they won an Academy Award. In addition to Foxx and Fey, the cast will also include Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Questlove.[4] Soul is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2020.
